Post-Renovation Cleaning in the Okanagan: Clearing the Dust After the Contractors Leave

Post-Renovation Cleaning in the Okanagan: Clearing the Dust After the Contractors Leave

Renovation dust gets everywhere, even in rooms the crew never touched. Here's what a proper post-renovation clean involves and why it's different from a regular clean.

Post-renovation cleaning is the step between "the work is done" and "we can actually live here again." Even a tidy crew leaves behind fine construction dust that settles on every surface, drifts into rooms that weren't part of the project, and hides inside vents, tracks, and cabinets. A thorough post-renovation clean removes that dust properly, top to bottom, so your new space looks the way it should. At Vernon Home Care Solutions, post-construction and renovation cleaning is available at $60 per hour.

Here's what makes it different, and how to plan for it.

Why Post-Renovation Cleaning Is Its Own Kind of Work

Construction dust is not the same as everyday household dust. Drywall sanding, cutting, and demolition create very fine particles that float for hours before settling. They coat horizontal surfaces, cling to walls, and get pulled through the home by air movement.

A regular maintenance clean isn't designed for that. Wiping construction dust with the wrong method can smear it or push it into corners. It often takes more than one pass, working from the top of the room down, to actually remove it.

    Where Renovation Dust Hides

After a renovation, dust tends to collect in places people don't think to check:

    • Tops of door frames, trim, and window casings
    • Light fixtures and ceiling fans
    • Vents and air returns
    • Inside window tracks
    • Inside cabinets and drawers, even closed ones
    • Baseboards throughout the home, not just in the work area
    • Behind and under appliances

If it isn't removed, that dust keeps resettling for weeks. Many homeowners clean once, then wonder why a fine grey layer keeps coming back.

    What a Post-Renovation Clean Covers

A post-renovation clean is scoped to the project, but it usually includes detailed dusting from ceiling to floor, wiping walls and trim, cleaning light fixtures, vents, and window tracks, wiping inside cabinets and drawers, cleaning and polishing fixtures and hardware, and thoroughly vacuuming and mopping floors.

Because every renovation is different, this work is billed hourly rather than by home size. The rate is $60 per hour.

    When to Book It

Timing matters. Book your post-renovation clean after the trades have finished the dusty work: sanding, cutting, and installation. If painters or finishers are still coming in, it's usually best to wait until they're done, so the space is only cleaned once properly.

If you're moving back into the home or putting it on the market, schedule the clean a day or two before you need it ready.

    Getting Ready for the Clean

A little preparation helps the clean go faster:

    • Make sure large construction debris and materials have been removed
    • Let us know which rooms were part of the renovation and which weren't
    • Mention any new surfaces that need special care, such as natural stone, new hardwood, or specialty finishes
    • Run the ventilation or change the furnace filter after the work is done, if possible

    Protecting Your New Finishes

New surfaces deserve a gentle approach. Fresh paint needs time to cure before it's scrubbed, new grout and caulking shouldn't be soaked right away, and natural stone and new hardwood each have their own care needs. Before we start, we'll ask about the materials used in your project so the right products and methods are used on each surface. The goal is to reveal the finished work, not wear it down on day one.

    After the Clean

Once the renovation dust is gone, many homeowners follow up with a regular recurring schedule to keep the space fresh. It's a good time to start, since the home is at its cleanest baseline. Recurring clients save 15% on weekly, 10% on bi-weekly, and 5% on monthly visits.

Renovating an Empty Home or Rental?

If the renovation is part of a move, a move-in or move-out clean may be the better fit. Those cleans include inside cabinets and drawers, full appliance detailing, wall spot cleaning, and deep sanitization of kitchens and bathrooms. We can help you decide which service matches the job.
